The Canterbury and Whitstable Railway DVD

Then & Now!

Archive footage and photographs combine with modern film and images to feature facets of the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway as they are now, since closure, and as they used to be.

Tyler Hill Tunnel - Collapse and Grade II listed structure
Whitstable Harbour - Transformation to a tourist attraction
Canterbury West Station - End of line to overgrown line
The "Oldest Railway Bridge" - Desecration and Demolition
Goods Shed - Canterbury a thriving market, Whitstable gone!
Winding Pond - Clowes Wood Tranquility - no more trains!

Closed for over 50 years the railway still lives on in the hearts and minds of local people. Celebrated each year on 3rd May the opening of the railway in 1830 continues to attract attention. As each year passes features disappear - 1969 the old brick bridge, 1974 Tyler Hill Tunnel collapse, 2009 Whitstable's Goods Shed.
Using archive footage and a wealth of photographs various features of the pioneering railway are shown as they are today and as they were - captured before it is too late. A variety of local people talk about the railway as they knew it. Their stories are both fascinating informative and often funny.
